The interim chancellor of D.C. Public Schools, Kaya Henderson, says the District is beefing up security at Dunbar High School. The decision comes shortly after a student was allegedly raped there. Friends of Bedford is a management company, brought in to improve Dunbar in 2008. Henderson says partner organizations, such as Bedford, should have autonomy.
"But at the end of the day the schools are still DCPS schools. And so if we feel the partner is not able to handle those issues, then we have to jump in," she says.
Henderson says they are closing off unused areas of the building, installing extra security and bringing in organizations to speak to students about rape.
But George Leonard, who heads Friends of Bedford, says he's been asking for more security for a long time.
"Dunbar is no more dangerous now than it was last year," he says.
The contract for Friends of Beford expires next spring, and Henderson says she hasn't decided whether she will renew it.
Leonard says former chancellor Michelle Rhee was much more supportive of his programs.
