Metro Area Residents Are Relatively Well Prepared For Retirement

Survey findings released Tuesday by Ameriprise Financial show that where people live may influence their readiness to retire.

The survey examined the nation's 30 largest metropolitan areas to determine where consumers are the most prepared and confident to retire. The Washington metro area ranked 23rd overall, among 30 cities and towns. But in terms of preparation for retirement, the metro area came in sixth place.

"We're the sixth-most prepared or at least we feel we're the sixth-most prepared region in the U.S. So that's a pretty good ranking. The reason that we dropped down to 23rd is [that] in terms of confidence, we're the 29th ranking," says Anna Behnam, a financial advisor with Ameriprise.

Behnam also says that 80 percent of those surveyed in the D.C. area are actually saving for retirement.
