Annual Ocean City Airshow Is In Jeopardy

A political debate over when to hold the wildly popular Ocean City Air Show could stop the event from happening at all in 2011.

Event Organizer Brian Lilley told the mayor and city council that he needs the second weekend in June to secure the best lineup possible for the third annual Ocean City Air Show. If not, he says he will not rule out pulling the 2011 show altogether.

Yet, Councilmember Joe Hall believes the air show should be the weekend prior, which is historically slow for hotels and restaurants.

"Putting a strong show like the air show on the weakest weekend would benefit the town the most economically," Hall says.

However, that lineup will be without the headlining act for the last two years: the U.S. Airforce Thunderbirds, who will be on a European tour at the time.

"You could produce any airshow with any headliner--as long as it's military jets--on the second weekend of June and still have a good enough air show that it would be considered successful, I do not feel that way on June 4 or 5," Event Coordinator Brian Lilley says.

Some members of council believe the event should be held on the historically slow first weekend of June, while Lilley says he can secure the best lineup possible on June 11 and 12.
