Tutition Rates Will Rise In Maryland Despite Campaign Rhetoric

Tuition rates at state universities in Maryland were a major issue during the recent gubernatorial election.

During his successful re-election campaign, Gov. Martin O'Malley touted the fact he was able to keep tuition rates level during his time in office, as opposed to the increases seen during his predecessor Bob Ehrlich's term.

But those rates won't be staying that way, now that O'Malley has defeated Ehrlich again. In a speech at Towson University, O'Malley says rates can't stay flat forever.

"The cost of everything over time goes up. What we have proposed for next year is a 3 percent increase. If we are able to keep it to 3 percent increases for the next four years, you would still see us becoming more affordable by comparison to the other 50 states. It's a bit of a pyrrhic victory," O'Malley says.

A full year's tuition at Towson for an in-state student living on campus is more than $17,000.
