Silver Spring Dedicates Plaza To Veterans

Play associated audio

In Maryland, the last portion of the new Silver Spring Civic Building in Montgomery County has been dedicated. The building itself opened over the summer, but it's outdoor entrance, named Veterans Plaza, wasn't officially dedicated until today, Veterans Day.

The dedication ceremony featured veterans of wars dating back to World War II, with a special focus on Native American veterans. County executive Isiah Leggett, himself a veteran of the Vietnam War, says the plaza is just a small token of gratitude to those who served their country.

"I had an opportunity just last year to go back to Vietnam, and to recognize and to see what a small country like Vietnam is doing for their veterans and the recognition of their efforts during the war. And that pales in comparison. We are doing something very small in comparison to what they are doing," Leggett says.

He adds that naming the plaza for veterans was one of the ways construction of the civic building was approved, as it inhabits land that was formerly the Silver Spring Armory.
