Intermission: The Backstage Hustle

The first act ends. Ideally, the audience thunderously applauds. Then the audience mills about -- maybe moseys to the bar or restrooms.

But behind the curtain, it's not exactly the eye of the hurricane. Stage and production managers have to be ready to handle any situation during the few minutes allotted for intermission. That could mean repairing costumes, fixing sets or even prepping replacements for actors who can't go on.

William Barnes, the production manager for the touring company of "HAIR," says a lot can be taught in 12 minutes.
