An offshore wind farm in the Thames Estuary. Pending legislation in Maryland would build wind farms off the coast of Ocean City.
Maryland has joined Delaware as the only two states in the country to have reached an agreement with the federal government to use federally-owned waters of the Atlantic Ocean as the home of future offshore wind farms. The deal could bring offshore wind farms and thousands of green jobs to the state.
Industry insiders say the announcement is a really big step forward. They also say it puts Maryland in a strong position to capitalize on the 4,000 so-called green collar jobs the construction of the wind farm would create.
The site plan for a one-gigawatt wind farm just 10 miles off the Ocean City coastline opens the door for private developers to step forward and commence with the four- to six-year permitting process.
