Final Count Shows Connolly Beating Fimian

The election results from the closely contested race for Northern Virginia's 11th Congressional District have now been certified at the local level, and it looks like Democratic Congressman Gerry Connolly will be spending another two years on Capitol Hill.

But it's not clear when, or if, Republican challenger Keith Fimian will concede.

Fairfax County Republican Committee Chairman Anthony Bedell says there are still reasons to withhold final judgment on the race.

In an email to supporters, he raised concerns about how military absentee ballots were handled and that in several precincts more votes were tallied than actual voters.

"I don't think anyone is alleging voter fraud at this point -- we're just examining these incidents to see what happened," Bedell says.

James Walkinshaw, campaign manager for Connolly, says any suggestion that the results of the election are in doubt or can be reversed are not credible.

"It's tough to put to bed allegations that never had any basis in truth, fact or evidence," Walkinshaw says.

Edgardo Cortes, general registrar for Fairfax County, says the post-election review found no irregularities with absentee ballots and actually corrected minor discrepancies at various precincts.

"The process worked exactly as it was supposed to," Cortes says, "and that's how we can ensure that the results that the board certifies are accurate."

The Fimian campaign has not said whether it will seek a recount.

Meanwhile, Connolly is in the hospital. A spokesman says the congressman's doctor recommended he be hospitalized for some testing after a check-up earlier in the week. He is expected to be back to work Monday.
