Hours after Mayor-elect Gray announced Reuben Charles would handle the day-to-day operations of the transition, reports surfaced that Charles owes more than a $250,000 in unpaid sales and use taxes.
Gray says he believes the lien is not a personal debt, but one tied to a firm in Illinois that defaulted on it's obligations.
Speaking on WAMU this morning, Gray says he doesn't believe Charles' tax woes will be a distraction.
"We'll be looking more closely at this, but I don't have any reservations at all that the fact that the work will go forward," Gray says.
The tax lien was first reported by the Washington City Paper.
Charles is a relative newcomer to the District--he moved to D.C. several years ago after working as a venture capitalist in St. Louis. He worked as a fundraiser for Gray during the primary campaign.
