The Natural Resources Defense Council says the region is among 15 places nationwide with the largest number of bad-air days.
The full rankings will be released next week, but the group says D.C. is not alone: New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas and Denver also figure among the nation's worst when it comes to air.
The group says that on average in these 15 areas, many households spend one out of every four days breathing bad air due to ground-level ozone.
In Washington in August, the air was unhealthy for sensitive groups one-third of the time.
