The District is asking the public for comment on a plan to redevelop a former underground trolley station into an arts and entertainment space.
The Dupont Circle Trolley Station is an underground complex of tunnels that stretches eight city blocks. It's been shuttered and closed to the public for 14 years.
An arts coalition and a developer have submitted a plan to the city to redevelop it.
"The main, primary goal is to create some sort of an art venue where local artists from different parts of the city can show their art, but we're also looking at having to pair that up with a driver for financial returns so some for-profit uses like restaurants and some retail with it," says Jeff Zell, a development consultant for the coalition.
The city has not formally embraced the plan; it's taking comments through the city's Web site over the next 30 days and will then decide whether or not to approve the plan.
