Md. School Board Race Heats Up

While the Congressional and gubernatorial races are getting most of the attention big changes are in store for Montgomery County Maryland's Board of Education.

The school board gets to pick the replacement for schools Superintendent Jerry Weast--and this year four board members are up for reelection. Current board president Patricia O'Neill has been on the board for 12 years. She says that experience will come in handy when replacing Weast.

"I'm the only board member who's ever done a superintendent search. I'm the last remaining board member that hired Dr. Weast. It's a long and arduous process--we expect it will take about six months. But even getting us started, I provided the information," O'Neill says.

O'Neil is trying to fend off a challenge from Karen Smith who is an attorney and active PTA member. She says O'Neill has gotten too cozy.

"If you are going to agree with absolutely everything the superintendent comes up with or everything the teachers' union comes up with, then you're not really doing the job," Smith says.

O'Neill says Smith's accusations are baseless campaign rhetoric.
