Montgomery County Heath Officials Talk About Bedbugs

Play associated audio

Although health officials in Montgomery County, Maryland acknowledge bedbug infestation in the county is not as bad as other regions, they say residents should still be informed, and vigilant.

It's hard to believe, but some folks in Montgomery County are still unaware of bedbugs.

"What? Bedbugs!" shouts one person.

Dr. Ulder Tillman health officer for Montgomery County says she'd like to see that change.

"We do need to become more knowledgeable about it," says Tillman.

Since 2007, health officials have found occasional infestations in county facilities with high turnover rate like hotels, nursing homes and hospitals.

Dr. Tillman says you can help avoid the critters by getting rid of clutter, vacuum rugs and carpets as often as possible and be sure to seal cracks and crevices to cover potential hiding places. Tillman says what's really hard to get rid of is the 'ick' factor.

"As I kept looking at all these different pictures of these bugs, their cycles and shedding their exoskeletons. It's like, ugh!" she says.

It's probably safe to say that most would tend to concur.
