"Art Beat" with Sabri Ben-Achour
There will be plenty an opportunity to folk about the region this weekend…
(Oct. 8) EBONY HILLBILLIES The Ebony Hillbillies have played their version of African-American String music on New York's subway platform circuit for 20 years, taking the odd night off for stints at Carnegie Hall. They bring their strings to the Washington Ethical Society on 16th Street in the Northwest tonight at 8 p.m.
(Oct. 8-9) BHARATA NATYAM Mallika Sarabhai is a lightning rod in India for her dancing and acting, and her strong, feminist approach to using art to promote social change. She will be performing classical South Indian dances known as Bharata Natyam tonight at 7:30 p.m. at U Street's Lincoln Theatre as part of the Dakshina Dance Company Fall Festival of Indian Arts.
(Oct. 8) THE PERFECT PIPE BOMB And if puppets, folk opera, and semi-psychedelic visuals sound like your idea of a good time, Strathmore Mansion in North Bethesda is the place to be. D.C. cult favorite Stripmall Ballads present their magnum opus, The Perfect Pipe Bomb tonight at 8 p.m.
(Oct. 9) FREEDOM FEST And for a traditional take on folk, there's always the subtly named American Freedom Festival at…Where else? George Mason University's Patriot Center in Fairfax. Hank Williams, Jr. and Jamey Johnson keep it real country Saturday night.
