Maryland is preparing to release 20,000 trout into lakes and rivers in October.

By Sabri Ben-Achour

Maryland's Department of Natural Resources says anglers should ready their hooks: the state is preparing to release 20,000 trout into lakes and rivers in October.

Charlie Gougeon is with DNR and he says the fish - hatchery raised rainbow trout and brown trout - are not that hard to catch.

"They're fairly--what we would call--gullible," Gougeon says.

Basically, they've been fed pellets by people their whole lives so they're fattened up and kinda dumb--they'll go after any bait. Fisherman Bernie Arnoldi doesn't approve.

"Brook trout are the only trout that are native to this area. They stock rainbow trout and brown trout and they don't belong here," Arnoldi says.

But Gougeon, with DNR, says the rainbow and brown trout are put in places where brook trout don't live, and when water temperatures rise again in the spring, they'll all die anyway. Besides, he says, "We expect the Anglers to take them out. and they do an excellent job at that."

A list of spots where the trout are being stocked can be found online at [www.dnr.state.md.us] (http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/stocking/) or by calling 1-800-688-3467.
