The owner of a dog shot and killed by a D.C. police officer says his dog was under control when the officer pulled the trigger.

Witnesses to the incident at Sunday's Adams Morgan Day Festival say the dog, described as a white pitbull mix, was barking and fighting with a smaller dog before the police officer tried to gain control of the situation.

Police say the dog also attacked three people, including the officer, before the officer opened fire.

But friends of the dog's owner say the officer didn't try hard enough to subdue the dog before firing the shot.

They say the dog's owner had the dog under control before the officer grabbed the dog and threw it down and fired at it. D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says she's still looking at all the facts surrounding the event.
