Ocean City Businesses Brace for Earl, Hope For Best

Labor Day marks one of the last big money making weekends for the business community in Ocean City, Maryland. With Hurricane Earl less than 24 hours away, some local businesses are bracing for the worst and hoping for the best.

At the Jolly Roger water park in Ocean City, getting drenched in water is usually a good thing.But as general manager Steve Patsuzak says, Earl threatens to make this weekend a total wash.

“I’m doing what everyone else is doing: tracking the storm, checking it at you know, 8, 11, 2, 5, 7, and 9, all night,” says Patsuzak.

Melanie Purcel, of the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce hopes visitors will delay their holiday plans and not cancel them.

“It’s definitely looking good, by Saturday it looks like it should be pretty well,” says Purcel.

Jay Lewis, manager at the Flamingo Hotel, says that he’s seen only a few cancellations so far.

“Even if Friday looks bad, Saturday and Sunday are looking pretty good.We are almost full,” says Lewis.

Earl is expected to pass by Ocean City some time late Friday.
