Campers Evacuate Ahead of Storm

As Hurricane Earl prepares to brush past the Del Marva peninsula, businesses, tourists, and animals are preparing for a short but possibly nasty storm.

They say that the wild horses that live on this island can sense pending storms.

But this herd seems content to munch on grass next to the beach.

"We do know they've been out here for hundreds of years and in general fare very well in storms," Park Ranger Carl Zimmerman says.

Campers though?

Not so much. They were evacuated earlier today. There are a few day trippers still on the beach though.

Richard Thompson is keeping one eye on his three small children, and another eye on the increasingly rough surf.

"The water is strong for the kids -- gotta keep 'em in knee deep at best," Thompson says.

Sal Gardner and his friends came down from Philadelphia and planned this trip a while ago so.

"We're gonna make the best of it," he says. "We're here today to enjoy the sun until its gone and then tomorrow we'll hunker down, and hopefully there'll be beach left for us to enjoy."

Hurricane conditions are expected to peak around Assateague Island at 8 am Friday.
