On the National Mall, D.C. Vote executive director Ilir Zherka is handing out little packets of tea to passersby.
"End taxation without representation in D.C. Take a tea bag," he says. "Support D.C. democracy."
Zherka says this weekend’s tea party provides a perfect opportunity to discuss the disenfranchisement of District residents.
"The Boston Tea Party was not about taxation. It was about taxation without representation. And I think that here in the District of Columbia, we are the natural inheritors of that fight. This is a place where taxation without representation is alive and well, and we need to remind people that that is true," he says.
Zherka is calling on tea party members and federal leaders to support congressional voting rights for the District.
