D.C. Seeks To Move 14th Street Slug Line

By David Schultz

Every weekday afternoon, 14th street in Northwest D.C. fills with sluggers. Drivers on 14th street headed to Virginia stop and pick these sluggers up so they can use the HOV lanes on the highway.

But Transportation officials in D.C. are worried the slug line is unsafe, because cars picking up sluggers tend to block traffic on the major north-south artery.

So, the District is embarking on a survey of sluggers to see if there's another place they can wait for a ride. Gabe Klein, D.C.'s Transportation Director, says the city wants to accommodate the sluggers but it also must ensure traffic flows smoothly.

D.C. will begin testing the new slugging locations in October.
