Rally Draws Similarities Between Women's Suffrage And D.C. Voting Rights

Demonstrators, some dressed as suffragettes, are gathering in front of the White House today to honor the anniversary of the 19th Amendment that guaranteed women the right to vote. They'll also be calling attention to the issue of D.C. voting rights.

Marchers will be wearing period garb as they celebrate the 90th anniversary of women receiving the right to vote. But they'll also be calling on Congress to pass a bill giving D.C. a vote in the House of Representatives.

Organizers say they see a similarity in the struggle women endured to get the right to vote and the fight the city has been waging to get Congressional representation.

D.C. delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton will address the march later this morning. She's spearheaded the city's efforts in Congress. A bill that would have given the city's a voting member in the House stalled, after gun rights advocates attached language that would have stripped away D.C.'s strict gun laws.
