Metro riders using paper fare cards now have to pay 25 cents more than Smartrip users.

On Monday, Metro will implement a new peak-of-the-peak fee weekday afternoons from 4:30 to 6:00 pm. Trips that begin inside that window will cost 20 cents more.

A 20-cent fee will be applied during the morning peak-of-the-peak period from 7:30 to 9:00 am on weedays sometime later in the month.

Metro has to work out a technical limitation before that can go into effect.

Meanwhile, the prices of three short-term metrorail passes go up this week as well.

These increases are part of $109 million in fare hikes approved by Metro's board of directors in May.

They're intended to help close the agency's budget shortfall.
