By Garrett Browne

The call for statehood status in D.C. is being renewed; a new effort is underway by Veterans in the District.

Veterans young and old came out on a sweltering Friday evening. They gathered on Freedom Plaza to let out their frustrations with the federal government for ignoring the citizens and service members in the District.

For Army Veteran Anthony Davis, it’s personal.

"Statehood to me means that we have a right to vote, to put into office those who are going to help the citizens of D.C. and the Veterans of D.C.," he says.

Family members also made their voices heard. Councilwoman Mary Cheh's brother served in Vietnam.

"Every day it’s a visual for me, because I know we are not free, we’re not free," she says.

The participants ended the rally with a march from Freedom Plaza to the Capital for a candlelight vigil.
