Veterans Rally For Representation In Congress Today

Veterans in the District are organizing a Statehood Rally this evening, saying it's unacceptable that they don't have a local voice in Congress.

Mathew Carey, with the organization Veterans and Military Families For Progress, says there are almost 35,000 veterans in the District. But despite their service, he says they don't have full representation in Congress.

"We feel we have volunteered or been drafted into the military during all the major conflicts, but are not treated like other citizens," says Carey.

D.C. does have a delegate to the House, but she doesn't have the voting rights of other Representatives, and the District has no vote in the Senate.

Carey says today's rally is a first for his group's members but says they will keep speaking out until the District gets statehood.

The rally will take place at freedom Plaza at 6 p.m.
