Windmills may be sprouting up in backyards in Anne Arundel County, Maryland in the next few months thanks to a new law.

Up until this week, anyone who wanted to put up a windmill in their back yard was shot down by neighbors and the county, in part because before now there was no zoning to regulate it.

Now there is.

"There's conditions on how high it can be, there's conditions on setback requirements from property lines, there's conditions on color," says county councilman Ron Dillon.

And if they're going to be put on less than three acres of land there has to be a public hearing. Dillon says the rules are the county's way of reducing the country's dependence on energy from abroad.

"It could be a meaningful energy provider to the citizens of the county," he says.

So far around 10 people have expressed interest.
