By Rebecca Blatt

Maryland's Gov. Martin O'Malley and Delaware's Gov. Jack Markell are asking President Obama for help in developing wind energy resources off the Mid-Atlantic coast.

In a letter to the president this morning, O'Malley and Markell ask Mr. Obama to direct federal agencies to invest in offshore wind energy, and support legislation to remove barriers to offshore development.

For instance, they suggest allowing the General Services Administration to enter into power purchase agreements beyond 10 years. They also recommend increasing loan guarantees, extending production tax credits and streamlining the offshore wind permitting process.

Maryland and Delaware are already pursuing investments in offshore wind power. The governors argue the proximity of Washington and federal agencies to mid-Atlantic wind resources presents an opportunity for wind-generated energy.
