Johns Hopkins Medicine says it is integrating a children's hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida into its network of medical facilities.

The plan is for All Children's Hospital and Health Center to join the Hopkins Health System later this year. Both parties have signed a letter of intent for the integration, though details are still being finalized.

All Children's is a 259-bed facility, with outreach to 8 counties in western Florida. It will be the first hospital outside of Maryland to join the Hopkins system. Steven Thomspon, Senior Vice President of Hopkins Medicine, says having access to communities outside the Mid-Atlantic will mean greater opportunities for research and collaboration.

"As the complexity of biomedical discovery continues, we really can all benefit from a larger platform from which to do that," says Thompson.

No money is changing hands in the move. All Children's will keep its name and leadership but will become a member of the Hopkins network.
