Voters in Anne Arundel County, Maryland will get to vote this fall on a zoning measure to allow a casino at a suburban shopping mall.

Maryland's Court of Appeals overturned a lower court ruling today, allowing the referendum to move forward.

Lawyers for the group Stop Slots at Arundel Mills were ecstatic about today's ruling. The group will now begin to focus on defeating the proposed casino at the polls in November.

The casino at Arundel Mills mall would be the state's biggest, and could bring Maryland roughly $450 million a year. Attorneys for the Cordish company, which is seeking to build the casino, argue allowing the referendum will cost the state money for education.

Gov. Martin O'Malley applauded today's ruling, but added his preference is for casinos to be built at race tracks and not in local areas.
