D.C. Council chairman and mayoral candidate Vincent C. Gray has removed a portion of an illegal fence that surrounded his home.

City officials say Gray faced fines for not filing a public-space permit application for a 6-foot-high aluminum fence he built around his house back in 2008.

Gray's spokeswoman Traci Hughes says late last week, the Democrat removed a portion of fencing from the front of his home that inspectors say was in violation. Part of the fence still surrounds the side and rear of his property.

Hughes adds, supporters of Mayor Adrian Fenty, Gray's Democratic rival in the September mayoral primary, had criticized Gray for his inaction regarding removal of the fence.
