Only Real Artists Need Apply

Affordable housing isn’t easy to find in D.C.; thousands are on government waiting lists. But there is hope for bargain-hunters...if they're artists.

A few blocks north of Union Station are the new Loree Grand apartments. The building has a roof top terrace, a concierge, and 30 affordable housing units with workspace. But to snag these units, you’ve got to prove you’re an artist.

"A sporadic participation in dance classes wouldn’t really demonstrate a body of work," says Anne Corbett of the Cultural Development Corporation. She says they’re screening paintings, sculptures and manuscripts, to make sure applicants are legit.

"We had someone apply as a photographer and gave examples of their work that were scientific specimens they had photographed while working at the University of Maryland," she says.

Corbett’s verdict? Not an artist.

Corbett DID say getting paid for your work is NOT a requirement. So, starving artists are welcome to apply.
