Public Transit Costs Rise In Arlington County

Transit costs continue to rise around the region. A Virginia county is no exception.

Lou Allen is at Courthouse Square in Arlington waiting for the Number 41 bus. His ride costs a bit more now, and he's feeling the pinch.

"I catch the bus every day to go to work and I was surprised they went up on the fare, ya know, I don't think it's fair to bus riders. I'm kind of like living from check to check so it's kind of hard for me," says Allen.

Rides on Arlington Regional Transit, or Art, increased by a quarter each way on July 1st. Phase two of the new fare structure goes into effect today on Star, the county's transit service for the disabled.

"People understand that everybody in the region is paying more," says Arlington County Board member Mary Hynes.

She says there are two reasons for the fare hikes: increased costs, and an agreement among area transit authorities to keep fares similar. The Star increases put the service in line with Metro Access.

The county's new fare system is expected to bring in approximately $200,000. Hynes says most of that money will be used for transit upgrades.
