Maryland Governors Race Ready To Hit TV

In Maryland, the gubernatorial race is about to hit the small screen. Gov. Martin O'Malley will run his first television ad this week, which focuses on budget cuts he has made during his first term in office.

The Democrat says he has reversed a large budget deficit that he inherited from former Republican Gov. Bob Ehrlich, his likely opponent this fall. Ehrlich claims he left O'Malley with a budget surplus, something O'Malley dismisses.

"He's been spinning a fairy tale for four years that he left a surplus." says O'Malley. "And, the 800 people who turn into right-wing radio shows on weekends might believe it."

Meanwhile, O'Malley doesn't believe the Obama administration's decision to sue the state of Arizona because of its controversial immigration law will hurt Democrats like him running this fall. The governor says one issue will trump all others.

"You need to stay focused on that issue on the forefront of minds of every mom and dad in the state," he says; "the security of their job, and the security of their home."

O'Malley says the possible political fallout from the lawsuit came up during last weekend's National Governor's Association meeting.
