The District's only professional cycling event is happening in downtown D.C. today. The Capital Criterium is the fifth stop of the nine race USA Crits series.

Criteriums are designed for speed. Men's amateur elite winner Timothy Brown from D.C. says the race features one of the most challenging courses on the circuit.

"At the very end there's a U-turn, and whatever position you kind of come out of that U -turn, you're not going to move up much after that, so it was really, really important to try to be up near the front," he says.

So what kind of strategy did he use?

"Near the end you have to hold your position, stay strong, you might get bumped but you want to try to stay up near the front and hope for the best," he says.

A celebrity ride featuring D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty and District Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton will happen later today.

The event concludes with the Men's Professional Race.
