National Public Radio Becomes NPR

WASHINGTON (AP) Just call it NPR. National Public Radio has asked its staff to use just its initials.

The Washington-based news organization says over the last several years it has been making the change, but it says it has now formally asked its staffers not to use the longer name on air.

NPR spokeswoman Dana Davis Rehm says that "a shorter brand name is usually better" and that the public and listeners have been identifying the station as NPR for some time. She also acknowledged that the station's website, NPR.org, and applications for electronic devices have a large following, making the station more than radio.

The organization's legal name will remain National Public Radio.
