D.C. Council Chair and mayoral candidate Vincent Gray is calling on Mayor Adrian Fenty to fire the city's attorney general. This afternoon, the Vince Gray for Mayor campaign released a statement calling for the removal of Attorney General Peter Nickles.
In it, Gray says Nickles "inappropriately politicized" his role as the city's top lawyer and "facilitated" the mayor's cronyism -- and highlights several incidents, including a recent settlement with Banneker Ventures, a firm that has close ties to Fenty and became embroiled in a contracting scandal.
Reached by cell phone, Nickles fires back, dismissing Gray's accusations and calling the statement "trumped up charges in the middle of a campaign."
"There is no cronyism", Nickles says. "Its a false political attack and I think the heat got to the chairman."
Nickels says there is absolutely no way he will step down.
