WASHINGTON (AP) The chairman of the D.C. council didn't pay a traffic ticket for more than seven years, and only sought to pay after he launched his campaign for mayor.

The Washington Post reports that Vincent Gray got the ticket in Maryland in 2002. Campaign spokeswoman Traci Hughes told the newspaper that Gray was on his way to a Washington Redskins game when he tried to get around a traffic jam and was ticketed.

Hughes says Gray was not the only driver stopped and thought he had paid the ticket, but it was discovered he had not during research for his campaign.

At the time he got the ticket, Gray was executive director of a nonprofit organization that serves homeless youths. Gray is challenging Mayor Adrian Fenty in the city's Democratic primary in September.
