RICHMOND, Va. (AP) Virginia's attorney general is critical of the federal government's legal challenge of Arizona's new immigration.
Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli said Thursday the legal challenge is hypocritical in view of the position the government has taken in its bid to dismiss Virginia's lawsuit challenging health care reform. He calls it "mind-boggling."
Obama administration lawyers have argued in federal court that Virginia had no legal standing to sue to block federal health care reform.
Cuccinelli told the Richmond Times-Dispatch the same standard should apply to the government in the Arizona matter.
The Arizona law's provisions include a requirement that police enforcing another law must investigate the immigration status of people if there is "reasonable suspicion" to believe the people are in the United States illegally.
