The first thing to remember - make sure you have plenty of engine coolant on hand.

John Townshend, with AAA Mid-Atlantic, says if your car overheats and you don't have enough coolant, you're in big trouble.

"You can easily warp the engine or destroy the engine," he says. "And you're looking at a $5,000 repair bill or having to replace the whole car."

But, Townshend also recommends keeping your gas half full at all times - just in case that breakdown does happen.

"You don't want to be sitting this extreme heat in a hot car," he says. "So keep enough gas to keep the engine running."

Townshend says, since the temperatures started climbing, calls for assistance to AAA are 35 percent higher than normal.
