D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty will not attend what was dubbed "The Great Education Debate".
But organizers say the event will continue with Vincent Gray, chairman of the D.C. council.
More than 250 people were expected to attend the one on one debate on education issues in the District and approximately 200 more were on the waiting list.
But organizers say they heard late last night the mayor "couldn't make it work."
Jesse Rausch is with DC Young Education Professionals.
His group is hosting the event.
He says they spoke directly to Fenty and got a confirmation on May 27th. Gray had confirmed a month earlier.
Helen Hare with Fenty's campaign says the Mayor had never confirmed he would attend and that there was a scheduling conflict.
She declined to say exactly what the conflict was.
Tonight's event may well be called the Great Education Monologue, though technically there will still be a moderator.
