The dean of Boston College Law School will soon become president of Catholic University of America in D.C. John Garvey will replace Father David M. O'Connell, who led the school for the past 12 years. O'Connell was recently named bishop-elect of the Diocese of Trenton, New Jersey.
Garvey will be the school's third lay president. He says he is committed to advancing the cause of Catholic higher education and says Catholic University is the best place to do that.
The school is the national university of the Roman Catholic Church, and the appointment of its leader requires approval from the Vatican.
The Archbishop of Detroit led a nine-month search as university board chair. He says Garvey brings wisdom about the church's place in contemporary society.
Garvey will begin work as president in July.
