Most MD Offices Closed Friday To Cut Costs

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) Most state offices in Maryland are closed for a scheduled furlough day for employees. Gov. Martin O'Malley ordered five service reduction days last summer to cut costs and ease budget shortfalls.

O'Malley spokesman Shaun Adamec said state parks are open Friday and public safety workers, including state police and corrections facility officers, are working, as are the employees who staff unemployment claims phone lines. The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration is one of the many closed offices.

This is the final service reduction day for state employees in this fiscal year. State workers were also ordered to take up to five floating days of additional unpaid leave, depending on their rate of pay.
