(May 28-June 17) CITIES EXPLORED If you've been bitten by the travel bug but don't have the time to decamp for the Memorial Day weekend, the Orchard Gallery in Bethesda provides an artful journey during Cities: Explored, on display through mid-June. The paintings of Corcoran-trained artist Elana McDermott portray clustered cities strokes, smudges and dots of buildings, skylines and lights, drawing inspiration from D.C., L.A. and New Orleans.

(May 28-July 4) GEODESIC DOMES AT ARENA If you prefer your structures with curves, Arena Stage in Crystal City, Virginia debuts R. Buckminster Fuller: THE HISTORY (and Mystery) OF THE UNIVERSE. The quirky Renaissance man behind the geodesic dome is reborn in this comical multimedia performance, running through July 4th.

(May 28-July 30) BUCKY ART In conjunction with the Arena Stage play, Buckminster Fuller-inspired works are taking to the streets during "Bucky Art", with an outdoor exhibit of the futurist's domes scattered throughout Crystal City this summer.
