Memorial Day travel in the D.C. region is expected to be up this year. More than 800,000 people from the area are expected to travel more than 50 miles this weekend, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. Spokesman Lon Anderson says that's a 6 percent increase from last year.
"It's clear," he says, "we are shedding that recession mentality."
Gas prices have fallen some in the recent weeks, though Anderson says they're still 40 cents more per gallon than at this time last year.
"The last two weeks, we've seen gas prices fall a dime," says Anderson. "Our average right now in the region is about $2.80 a gallon."
Eighty-five percent of travelers this weekend, close to 700,000 people in the area, are expected to drive to their destinations.
