First D.C. Public School Introduces Lacrosse

This spring Woodrow Wilson High School became the first public school in the District to field a lacrosse team. Most of the team had never picked up a lacrosse stick before. By the time the season started, the team had barely learned the rules.

"First game, we spent a lot of time in the penalty box, but I think we’ve got that under control now," says Lucius Polk, who coaches Wilson’s team. He says lacrosse is a tough sport to learn.

But his players are natural athletes, kids who know the footwork, just maybe not the rules.

Iggy Molina is on the team.

"We picked up the sport very fast," she says. "We're not quite professional or anything, but we definitely improved."

The team’s historic season comes to an end today.
