DC Council Passes On Vote To Increase Fees

WASHINGTON (AP) The D.C. Council decided not to move forward with an emergency measure proposed by the mayor to increase fines and fees to close a budget gap.

The measure was expected to raise some $7.5 million for the city by increasing building fees, business license fees and ticket fines. The council decided at a meeting Tuesday to table the measure, which would have been in effect through September. The members essentially handed the issue back to the mayor, saying he likely had the authority to raise the fines and fees on his own.

Some council members expressed frustration at the increases, which would have included things like upping the cost of a ticket for making a turn from the wrong lane from $25 to $100.
