The University of Virginia may be preparing to fight a request by that state's Attorney General to hand over documents and emails of a former professor.

Last month, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli ordered the university to turn over documents and emails related to grants received by Dr. Michael Mann. Mann used to be a professor of environmental science at UVA and is a leading climate change researcher.

Cuccinelli's office says it's investigating whether any fraud was committed in Mann's grant applications. The University of Virginia's Faculty Senate, and some other academic and scientific organizations, are accusing the attorney general of trying to suppress scientific research.

The university has retained a law firm, Hogan and Lovells, to explore its options. The school has asked for a reduction in the scope of the documents requested, and has been granted an additional month to develop its response.
