First lady Michelle Obama delivered the commencement speech for George Washington University today on the National Mall. Mrs. Obama spoke to GW students today because of a promise she made eight months ago.

"I promised you that if you performed more than 100,000 hours of service to the greater Washington community this school year, that I’d come and speak at your commencement," she says. "Well, I am a woman of my word."

Mrs. Obama acknowledged today’s graduates are entering a tough economy.

"So no one would have blamed you had you chosen to hunker down and turn inward, but so many of you have done the exact opposite," she says.

She encouraged students to continue giving to others, not just locally, but as global citizens.
