No Anti-Bully Laws For Private Schools In Maryland

By Matt Bush

Private schools in Maryland still will not have to follow anti-bullying laws adopted by the state legislature two years ago, despite a new attempt to get them to comply.

The laws currently apply only to public schools. But a move to get private schools to follow them too was defeated in the state house by just a handful of votes.

Delegate Craig Rice of Montgomery County sponsored the budget amendment, which many private schools said was intrusive.

"I'm really not trying to get involved in their business," he says. "Their business is educating children. But the function of the state is to protect our children, and that's where we have purview."

Rice sponsored a separate bill on the matter, but it failed to get out of committee.
