Metro Board Weighs In On Cuts To MetroAccess

For many people, MetroAccess is the only way to get around. But over the past decade, MetroAccess costs have quadrupled. Now, many of its services are on the chopping block.

Mortimer Downey, the federal representative on Metro's Board, says MetroAccess should be trimmed down to the bare minimum:

"We need to look at what is absolutely obligated under the Americans with Disability Act and then what are we providing as a public service and who could help us do that," says Downey.

Metro Board Chairman Peter Benjamin, a Maryland representative, agrees MetroAccess costs are out of control. But he says they can be reined in through fare increases.

"We're going to have to find a way to make sure that people do get service. We may have to charge more in order to allow those people to get it," Benjamin.

Downey suggests people using MetroAccess now be given a grandfather clause, so they won't be affected by the cuts.
