Bully Laws Won't Apply To Private Schools In Maryland

An effort to make private schools in Maryland adopt state laws regarding bullying has been defeated in the general assembly.

The amendment to the state budget failed by a handful of votes. Private schools fought it, saying the state had no business telling them how to run their schools.

Delegate Craig Rice of Montgomery County, who sponsored the amendment, doesn't see it that way.

"This is a public safety issue," he says. "Oftentimes, with the state, we affect the public safety of the schools, teacher certifications, and just making sure kids have the basic protections. And I think this is one of them that qualifies the same way."

Rice pushed for the amendment after the bill he sponsored on the matter failed to get out of committee.
